Thumbnails

Lust- Bedroom scene, semi zoomed, in very intimate looking, messy bed, intimate lighting, warm colors, at the foot of the bed a set of legs/feet bound together moving out of sight of the image, Window on the wall in the background giving view to a 'red light district'.

Gluttony- 1) Vintage kitchen, obese man laying in foreground on delicious foods. 2) obese man laying on red velvety chaise lounge in a land fill

Sloth- City street scape at night, lights of cars zooming past,  skinny man (think holocaust skinny) laying on dingy rusty gross cot on side walk.

Greed- Svankmajer-esque portrait of a beautiful woman. I don't think that I'll use just vintage luxuries, that may be too specific/difficult to find a variety of things. I may use luxury objects from all time periods.

Sins Email

I had received the email, it was in my trash bin. I was able to watch the videos and look at the articles over the weekend. Here are my responses.

Wrath- The Nazi Drawings- very powerful disturbing drawings. I like that the power is created from the content of the images rather than the artists technique/skill.

Sloth- 'Make people want things they don't need.' This video gave me a lot to think about, but for me I think it resonated more with Greed than Sloth. After watching this video my idea of how to portray a greedy person has changed. I think Green could be shown very well through objects rather than a 'type' of person. I think I would like to create a piece like a Svankmajer piece, where one object is made up of multiple others. In the video they mention that some of the desires for these material objects also stems from sexual desires, so I would like to use objects that have a sexier feel to them. The objects that I would like to use are antique styled items. Ex; pearls, silks, feathers, hats, ect.

Lust- The fishermans wife was a good view of lust that I never thought of. I like the feeling of unease it gives the viewer. This I think is based on the content of the image, and the fact that it is a woman in an intimate scene with an octopus rather than a man. I like the fact that the  feelings of unease come from the content rather than the visual aspect of it.

Gluttony- I love this video and I would really like to do something like this but in image form.
-Paul McCarthy- I also watched 'trailer paul mccarthy at s.m.a.k.' This is a good visual for the over indulgence in both gluttony and greed. I also find his exaggeration and over the top approach extremely interesting.

**Greed/Pride came up as the same video. It was a 'romantic comedy' its an interesting portrayal as to how people today will do almost anything to get the things that they want. No matter what it may cost another person. And if they do not get what they want, they turn to lashing out in a fit.

I also googled Ryan Trecartin and watched his 'any ever' video and I think that reality TV may be the perfect platform for Pride. The people that are on these shows are so proud to be on them, but why? Almost all of them are on these shows to be laughed at or exploited in one way or another. Most people watch these reality tv shows (Jersey Shore, Flavor of Love, ect) to poke fun at the people on them.

*Should all of the pieces have the same overall tone? Like for Gluttony I would like it to have a grotesque discomforting feeling to it, but with Greed I would like something like Svankmajer creates with antique like luxuries.

*Pointers on using a tablet?

Magazine suggestions?

Related Art

Here are a few pieces that stuck out to me when I was researching the sins. They helped give me some good ideas on how to represent them and different types of imagery that I had not thought of yet. Also whole new ideas to try for a piece. I'll be looking at more work while I'm making the pieces. I also plan to watch the movie Seven to help get a better visual on representations of each sin.

Albrecht Durer- St Michaels Fight Against The Dragon
I like the over all feel of this piece. I like the imagery of the angel, and just the overall feel of this piece. I like the way that the many thin lines give the piece an eerie feel. I like that a lot of his work feels like this and I could gather a lot of inspiration for imagery from many of his pieces.

7 Deadly Sins Americas Next Top Model
I like the depiction of each of the sins in one image. I also like the symbolism of the women in the caskets, signifying that they're possibly in there because of the sin. I like this piece, but would like to keep away from such an energetic feel (depending on the 'sin').

Goyas Disasters of War etchings
I've looked at a lot of his etchings and I def. do like them, and will be looking at them more if I start to run dry on ideas for imagery and symbolism.

Hieronymus Bosch 7 Deadly Sins
I looked at a lot of Bosch's work tonight, and I really like the over all feel of most of his pieces as well as the way hes portrayed many of the moral messages that he is representing in his work.

Caravaggio- Doubting Thomas
I like the grotesqueness of this image for the project. At first glance it seems as though theres nothing ascu, but upon further investigation you see that a man is sticking his finger inside a wound on another mans mid section. It looks so realistic that it makes me a little uncomfortable looking at it, b/c it makes me think of a person really sticking their finger in anothers wound.

Fuseli- The Nightmare
I really like a lot of Fuselis pieces. I think that these could really help me think of new ways to represent the sins.

I couldnt find an artist for this piece, but I love it. This piece makes me want to take an abstract approach to each of this sins, but I'm afraid that might lead me to making more of an 'ad' to represent each sin. I do really like this piece though.

This piece makes me feel extremely uncomfortable to look at. It just looks so gross and unapealing that it actually draws you in with that. This, I think, is exactly what I imagined when I thought of gluttony. Imagine this face on a big fat sweaty body sitting at a kitchen table with tons of gross food in front of it. Just foul.

Pieter Bruegel The Elder 7 Deadly Sins
This is one in Bruegels series that he did based on the sins. I like the way he executed this series and I think that this might be an approach that I might like to take on some of the pieces. (Having more of a collage of a lot of different things happening but each individually representing the sin that the piece is based on. This would most likely done in photoshop and illustrator rather than by hand.)

Guiseppe Acrimboldo- Summer
I LOVE his use of many different objects collaged together to create a single piece. I think I would def. like to try my hand at something like this. I just really really like it.
